Arun Valley Makalu Base Camp Trekking – 20 n 21 d
 

Route:
Kathmandu > Khandbari > Chichira > Sedua > Tashi Gaun > Khongma Danda > Nehekharka > Mera > Makalu Base Camp > Barun Pass Khongma > Navagaun > Num Village > Bhote Bass

Trip Overview
Utterly marvelous, still very untouched and an irregular trekking area of Makalu region is very close to the Everest region. Because of Arun River, it is known as Arun Valley too. The Arun Valley is an unimaginable area and it is famous for both the culture and nature.This area is a naturalist’s paradise and it is teeming with many precious plants, animalsand Mt. Makalu (8475m.)

Birds and is a significant part of the Himalayan environment and ecosystem.People living in this remote place depend on cattle herds, farming and small – time trade. The number of population is 32000. Various castes and ethnic groups from this population, they are: Sherpa in the higher elevation, Gurung, Tamang, Magar, Newar, Brahmins, Chhetris and the others in the rest, The tour to those places have many attractions because of the cultural reasons too.

Trip Itinerary :
Day 01: Arrival
Arrive Kathmandu (KTM), Transfer to Hotel and welcome dinner in the evening.

Day 02: Kathmandu
Kathmandu Sightseeing, 1/2 Day sightseeing around the Kathmandu valley and trekking arrangements and O / N in Kathmandu.

Day 03 : Kathmandu–Khandbari (1100m) – [5 hours]
After flying to Tumlingtar we walk north to Khandbari. The trail crosses plateau (45 minutes) then climbs gradually. We camp above the village on large grassy fields.

Day 04 : Khandbari–Chichira (1837m)  [6 hours]
You will walk through many small picturesque villages. Trek goes along the ridge through the town of Manebhanjyang (1125m) to Chichila.

Day 05 : Chichira–Num (1490m) [5 ½ hours]
The morning starts with wonderful views of Makalu and the surrounding snow-capped peaks. The path, an ancient trading route, after a few up and downs, descends through forest to Num.You have to head north and will reach your destination, Num for the day.

Day 06 : Num – Sedua (1525m) [6 hours]
We descend steeply through incredibly lush jungle for 2 hours to the suspension bridge across the Arun River (685m). It is a 2 hours ascent to Kerabari. Then continue upward for 2 more hours to Sedua and the police check post.

Day 07 : Sedua – Tashigoan (2085m) [6 hours]
Ascending through forest you will arrive to the picturesque Sherpa country and begin to notice Sherpa homes clustered on the hillsides of Tashigoan known as “Luck Village” which is the last village en route to the base camp.

Day 08 : Tashigoan – Khonpma Danda (3485M) [6 hours]
Today your trek head north, crossing many dry streams through a dense cloud forest. Overhead, the trees are adorned with orchids. Then you have to enter into more open country and campsite for overnight is at Khongma Danda.

Day 09 : Khonpma Danda – Mumbuk (3490m) [7½ hours]
Above Khonpma we occasionally walk on snow (depending on the season) to Chanse Danda. Two hours further on is Magar Chanse Danda. The views on this day are spectacular and the trail is streamed with prayer flags and views of Makalu, Chamlang, Baruntse, Kanchenjunga and Jannu as well. Then begin climbing the first of two passes, Keke La at 4060m, Sheptung La at (4205m) and then descend slightly to Thulo Pokhari, the magical lake. The trail climbs again to the Tutu La at 4100m. where there are spectacular views of Tibet. Again you have to descend through Fir, Rhododendron and Birch forest to Mambuk and place your camp at approximately 3490m.

Day 10 :  Mumbuk – Nehekharka (3450m) [5 hours]
Starting early we take about an hour to cross some landslides. 4 hours further on over the higher river plains is Nahekharka. Today your trek descend slightly and heap up the valley in the Barun canyon where one can see glimpses of the “Great Black One,” Makalu. You will pass through open meadows among forests of silver fir and birch to your camping ground at 3450m of Nehekharka

Day 11 : Nehekharka–Mera (4545m) [5 hours]
The path contours around the Barun canyon along a serene pasture. There is a remote cave up high in the rocks where Guru Rimpoche stayed. During the fall moon of August in the monsoon, there is a festival held here in which people will go up to the cave, where it is said that if you are infertile or barren and do a Puja, you will bear children. There are the sheer cliffs to the south and the one on the right is the mother and the one on the left, the father. We then cross the Barun Khola to a quiet, peaceful valley. There are many waterfalls, which cascade off the canyon walls (if not frozen). We reach the point called Ripu Maidaan at 3951m. and cross many tributaries to Tadosa, meaning “horse tie,” where Shiva tied his steed. We continue to Yak Kharka with its roofed hut, near the upper limit of the forest at Yak Kharka, 4200m. You have to continue over a ridge for a view of the Barun Glacier and then to a string of stone enclosures and a designated campsite at Mera.

Day 12 : Mera–Makalu Base Camp
Today you will pass by glacier with spectacular alpine scenery before reaching the base camp. Continue on to Shershong at 4700m. and trek towards north, up the valley and beneath the south face of Makalu into the “throne of the gods.” Now you will arrive at base camp at 5147m.

Day 13 : Makalu Base Camp-Barun Pass
Trek return to Barun pass.

Day 14:  Barun Pass-Khongma
Trek retraces to camp at Khongma.

Day 15:  Khongma-Navagoan
Trek return to Navagoan.

Day 16 : Navagoan-Num Village
Trek return to Num Village.

Day 17:  Num Village-Bhote Bass
Trek return to Bhote bass.

Day 18:  Bhote Bass-Tumlingtar
Trek return to Tumlingtar.

Day 19:  Tumlingtar-Kathmandu
Fly to Kathmandu & transfer to hotel.

Day 20:  Kathmandu
Kathmandu Sight seeing around the ancient City Bhaktapur and farewell dinner with typical Nepalese program in the evening.

Day  21: Departure
After breakfast drive to Airport for your onward destination.

The total cost for the trek or tour you decide you want to do will depend on several different factors. The type of accommodation you prefer in Kathmandu will make a difference to the overall cost (budget to 5 star accommodations). The mode of transport you prefer will also affect the cost of your package, for example prices vary greatly between flying versus private car/van, tourist or local buses. The camping trek and teahouse trek made a difference in the cost. The number of guides and porters required will also affect the total cost of your trek. For these reasons, the same trek / tour can vary in price quite substantially.
